Art 1 students continue using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design they learned about in the previous 2 weeks. This week is full of several short projects, giving students a busy classroom every day! Students first create projects focusing on Texture. After collecting both actual and implied textures (through rubbings & drwaing), students create collages of their textures. It is amazing to see the different smooth, rough, prickly, sticky, fluffy kinds of textures they find and create! Students next explore Line by creating a relief sculpture from cut white paper. Students can curl, zig-zag, cut thin and thin strips, then glue them to a another piece of white paper to make an interseting all-white study of lines! Students will make value study drawings of these sculptues to further explore Value next week! Students next explore Space by creating drawings of chairs in class close up and from different angles. They focus on positive/negative space and creating dynamic compositions. After creating 3 different 3x3 inch drawings in their sketchbooks, they colored each one in an interesting way to focus on the lines and shapes created by the positive/negative space. Our final Element to explore is Color! Students learn new color vocabulary, including color schemes, mixing and theory vocabulary. Students also learn the practice of color mixing by creating their own color wheels including primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, as well as tints and shades of each hue. Any assignments not completed this week will carry over to next week!
Advanced Art students begin the week by altering one of their contour drawing exercises from last week into an interesting work of art. It is up to the student to choose how to alter the drawing and which medium to use. Next, students choose a masterpiece to alter. Students first make a contour drawing of the masterpiece, then choose a technique in which to make the masterpiece different. Students can collage, paint, draw, or use mixed-media. the challenge is to make it an interesting new work of art!
