Welcome to the online art studio, aka the wired atelier*!

This blog is designed for students and families in Allison Fuller-Mulloy's SMHS Art Classes. It is a site for posting our daily work and homework (IWs) each week, ideas and images to explore further, reminders and due dates. I hope this blog will help students by reinforcing the week's major ideas and activities, giving make-up work for absentees, and providing families a look into the atelier every day!

Week 27... More Collaboration and Layers

Art 1 students will begin another collaborative painting project this week, each student completing an individual painting which will be combined with others to create one large image. Each student was given a small rectangle of grays, blacks,a dn whites, and each student musyt reproduce their rectangle excatly on canvas using paint. If each student completes an accurate representation of their piece, we will have 2 large images by combining the 125 total canvases. When finished, the large images made of canvases will be hung in school for all to see.

Advanced Art students are beginning the 12 Layer Canvas this week. Each day, students will be given a prompt to add a layer of a certain material or element to the canvas. Students may choose to interpret the prompt and material any way they choose. Students will focus on decision making using materials and learn to "respond" to materials like an artist. This process is impossible to plan, as students only know one layer of the 12 at a time. Instead, students are challenged to reflect on their own processes as artists and experiment with the combination of different materials and elements.

Week 26... Collaborative Painting and 12 Layers

Art 1 students will begin a collaborative painting project this week, focusing on the style and influence of artist Keith Haring. After recording information about Haring's life and work to start an IW entry, students split into groups of 2 or 3 to brainstorm ideas in their workbooks for their own Haring style mural. Students chose a positive message they wanted to communicate to their school and peers, then used Haring's style to create signs and symbols to communicate their message. When finished, the large murals will be displayed around school for their peers to view.
